10/14/11 A Break in the Rain

Rainy day fun- Kris' glasses
J made some glasses too!
It rained most of the night and continued raining through the early afternoon. Crazy thing was, it was still warm outside! The boys could still play on the deck and the laundry still continued to dry! I was so glad that we went to the market yesterday so that we didn’t have to go out in the rain today. The boys happily devoured scrambled eggs and toast for breakfast, the first eggs they’ve had in over 2 weeks.
Our dinosaurs!
During the rain the boys and I started working on wooden dinosaur models that my dad bought for them. I ended up doing most of the work, but Jonathan and Aaron helped when they could. We made Deinonychus (Dine-on-ih-kus) models. Thanks so much Papa! The boys love their dinosaurs!

Since the boys were awake at 6am again, a time of rest was certainly in order for today. Jonathan read books quietly on his bed and Aaron slept for 2 hours. He was in a much better mood for the rest of the day.
After rest time the rain had stopped so we ventured out. Ruth lent me her crock pot and I cooked one pound of pinto beans overnight and started another pound to cook during the day. We decided to have chili and cornbread for dinner but we didn’t have a pan to cook the cornbread in.

Snuggling w/Daddy. AJ loves to have his back rubbed!
We were going to go to 3 Flags which is the grocery store that Ruth and Abel recommended but we drove up around 3pm and the place was flooded with kids who just got out of school, so we decided to go to San Ignacio first and stop by the bank and get gas. Gas here is very expensive, it is $5.23/gal! We paid $150 for almost 29 gallons of gas. I hope that lasts us a while. Downtown was packed with people! I noticed the other day that most businesses here open around 8am and close at 3pm. This is certainly an early-rising culture!

J drew this on his own & dictated the sentence, then he copied it.
After stopping at two different stores we picked up a can opener, spatula, pizza pan, baking pan, frying pan, paring knife, cutting board, and shower curtain rings, and spent $52.62US. Even though it was a couple hours later, 3 Flags was still busy, so Kris and the boys waited in the car and I ran in to get bread, milk, cheese, butter, and chili powder. That cost us $12.73US. We bought some bread a few days ago and it was moldy already. The bread doesn’t have any dates on it here so it’s hard to tell how fresh it is. We are keeping this new loaf of bread in the fridge and we’ll see if it stays edible longer.

I went to look up a cornbread recipe online and found that the internet was down again (it’s pretty inconsistent). So I called my mom and she read me a recipe and also looked up Celsius/Fahrenheit conversions because our oven only has Celsius on it. Thanks for saving our dinner Mom! I went to miz up the cornbread and realized that we didn’t have a mixing bowl. Time to get creative! Turns out the large frying pan we bought works well as a mixing bowl! (but I did add it to the shopping list for another day). The chili came out pretty good and I made the cornbread with green chilies- it was really good!

Tiny gecko we found in the boys' room
The boys were in bed by 8pm. We watched a movie and were in bed by 11pm. Tomorrow is the big market day in San Ignacio and we want to get up early (considering how early the boys have been waking up, I don’t think that will be a problem).
