We set out from Cancun at 9:25am. The road took us right
along the coast, so we enjoyed beautiful views of the ocean for most of the
day. Jonathan saw a windmill and happily remarked, “Oh, look a big windmill, I
haven’t seen one of those in years!” (I guess we were in Belize longer than I
thought, lol). We came into the town of Merida and tried looking for a place to
stop for lunch. I say tried because we spent over an hour “making memories”,
aka getting lost. It simply amazes me how the highway comes into a town and
disappears! Then we had one way streets that weren’t labeled, streets without
any lane markings, left turn only lanes (unmarked of course)… all making things
difficult. After following a bus through the downtown area which was packed
with people we finally made it out of town! Then we pulled over and made peanut
butter and jelly sandwiches for lunch.

We stopped around 5pm for the night in the town of Champoton and
stayed at a nice hotel called Hotel Snook. This place even had sheets with its
name on it and a complimentary bottle of water in the bathroom. We paid
600pesos or $46.15US for the night. After settling our stuff we asked the front
desk clerk where to find good food. She directed us to a deli up the street so
we ate dinner there for $13.08US. This hotel had a pool which the boys were very
excited about, it even had a slide!! Turns out that the water wasn’t heated
though! So Kris went down the slide with Aaron exactly one time and then Aaron
was done with that. Jonathan didn’t care that the water was cold, he loved
every minute of it. Once his lips were blue and he was shivering we brought the
boys back to the room for warm showers and bed. One of the challenges has been
that we all stay in the same hotel room so it’s hard to expect the boys to
sleep when we’re up, talking, and/or on the computer. So some nights we all go
to sleep early, other nights we stay up a bit later. Tonight was one of those
later nights. We heard all kinds of noise like firecrackers and horns, sirens,
etc. Kris went out to investigate. Turns out there was some sort of water
parade along the river next to our hotel. He could see a large idol of Mary on
a boat and other boats were following it setting off fireworks and people
crowded the street next to the river yelling and shouting. Even with the air conditioner
and sound machine going full volume, it was still very loud in the room, and
the fireworks kept setting off many different car alarms, ours included! It finally
quieted down after 11pm.
