As our last exploring mission in Belize we set off for the Mayan Ruins at Carocal, which has the highest structure in all of Belize! The road was the same bumpy, full of pot holes road we took to Rio Frio, so we knew what to expect most of the way. We had to stop and sign in at a military ranger station and then continued on our way. Much to our surprise, the last 20 miles or so the road was paved!! And even had a yellow dividing line painted on it!! It took us nearly 3 hours to arrive at Carocal! Caana or sky palace is 140 feet tall! And yes we climbed it!! It is taller than the Castle at Xunantunich, but didn't seem as scary because it wasn't as steep, and the climb was tiered in that we climbed 1/3 of the way up then it levels off, then another third up to a plateau, then the final ascent to the top! We heard lots of howler monkeys and I tried to get it on video, but it's barely audible.
