Going to Caye Caulker!! Friday 11/25/11

We rode with Ruth & Monica to Belize City and they dropped us off at the Caye Caulker Water Taxi Terminal. We rode over this bridge, turns out it is the only hand cranked swing bridge in the world. It swings to the side twice a day to let sailboats pass through. We were so grateful for Ruth as the streets of Belize City were jam-packed with cars and people! It was a zoo! We bought a round trip pass from Belize City to Caye Caulker, $45US, Aaron was free. We had about 45min to wait so we sat down and got comfortable. Kris started talking to this American couple, Anthony & Shannon. He is from Tennessee and she is from Kentucky. They are working with a board of Christians from Belize and the US to build a Christian school in San Pedro on the island of Ambregis Caye. We enjoyed sharing with them about our travels too. They were interested in talking to Kris about their website which he said he’d gladly help with. The taxi arrived and TONS of people piled into it as it was the last taxi of the day. We held the boys on our laps and it was a very long hour ride to Caye Caulker.
our room at Sailwinds

Living room & kitchen area
By the time we reached the island it was nearly dark and we didn’t know exactly where we were staying for the night. I’d done a bunch of research online and had 5 hotels picked out but we’ve learned that it really helps to see the rooms in person so you know exactly what you are getting. The streets of Caye Caulker were sand and we only saw golf carts and bicycles- no cars!! We walked down the main road and looked at the cheapest hotel on my list. Kris saw the room and vetoed it immediately. Since we were lugging a big rolling duffel bag around along with two backpacks we decided to get a taxi. The driver knew where the hotels were and took us to another one on my list, Sailwinds. Kris looked at one room there and decided it would work for the night. We paid $70US for a one bedroom with a king size bed, bathroom, living room with sofa bed and kitchenette. After dumping our stuff we headed out to find dinner.
Bambooze
Playng in the sand while waiting for dinner
There was a guy out in the street encouraging people to come to his restaurant, Bambooze. So we decided to give it a try. The ambiance was fantastic! Bamboo walls and roof, sand floor and the neatest thing- swings for chairs at the bar and at a couple of the tables!! We decided not to sit in the swings as the boys have enough trouble getting food from plate to mouth without spilling it. Dinner was incredible! Kris had 2 lobster tails, I had shrimp & rice and the boys shared a chicken quesadilla, plus a couple rum drinks- all for $49US. After dinner we headed back to our room and I got the boys ready for bed while Kris stopped by a grocery store to grab cereal and milk for breakfast and also to wander around and check out other hotels that might be cheaper. The boys slept on the sofa bed. They are not used to sharing a bed so it took them quite a while to fall asleep. Kris returned saying that most of the hotel offices were closed but he got some Trix, Honey Bunches of Oats and milk for breakfast (for $8.50US).
