Caye Caulker Sunday 11/27/11

Kris tried calling Anthony, the guy we met while waiting for the water taxi. We arranged to take the water taxi to San Pedro and meet them there the next morning. We were a bit disappointed that our Google search didn’t reveal any Christian churches on the island, but we set off to enjoy God’s creation anyways. We really wanted to explore more of the island, but the boys’ little legs could only walk so far. We decided to remedy this problem by renting a pair of bicycles. We found a bicycle that hand a child seat on the back for Aaron, so he rode with me. Jonathan sat on Kris’ handlebars with his legs and feet in the front basket. After paying $1.50US per bike for one hour we were off and pedaling. It had been years since I’d last ridden, but thankfully you don’t forget how to ride a bicycle! It was amazing just exploring the lower part of the island. We found the airport and turned one corner to see about 100 blue crabs scurry down into their holes in the ground. The roads were full of bumps and pot holes but the scenery was beautiful. By the time our hour was up, both our legs were quite sore! We returned the bikes and went in search of food- we’d certainly earned our lunch!

caught a blue crab before he went into his hole.
We came upon a place called The Happy Lobster and decided to give it a try. Even though it was noon we could still order from the breakfast menu. Aaron happily devoured most of his order of 3 pancakes (that were about 6in, in diameter) w/ lots of syrup. JJ at all of his grilled cheese and French fries, Kris had a omelet with sausage, ham & cheese with hashbrowns; I ate a ham & cheese omelet with Belizean Fry Jacks (which looked like deep fried won tons but were super sweet) with butter and jam. Everything was fantastic, for only $25US! On our way back to the hotel we stopped at a jewelry stand and Kris bought me a set of starfish earrings and matching necklace made from conch shells that I’d been admiring for $20US. Kris also signed up for a night snorkeling tour for that evening for $33US.
My lunch- omelet and fry jacks!
Loving his pancakes!
Yumm, grilled cheese!
After rest time we got ice cream cones ($4.50US) and hung out at the playground. Kris grabbed some sushi for dinner, he got 5 rolls- California Rolls, Shrimp rolls and Lobster rolls (all cooked) for $32.50US. He ate early since he had to be back at the snorkeling place at 4:30pm. The boys and I had dinner in our room and watched some TV before they went to bed. Kris came back and told me about his snorkeling tour. He said it was amazing! He went out with a group of about 10 people including one guide. They took a boat out to the Great Reef. Each of them was given a torch to use underwater. They swam near each other and the guide would point out certain creatures as the appeared. Kris said he saw a Spanish Lobster (guess he was a long way from home, lol), lionfish, two octopi, electric ray, moray eel, some bio luminescent fish (they make their own light and glow in the dark), lots of shrimp, parrot fish, and conch too.
Ice cream!
Yum!
